Cheers to 2019
As I reflect on 2018, I can’t help but share my thoughts. What a year for Couch!
I want to start by thanking you. A truly heartfelt, giant super size thank you to all of our wonderful patrons, friends, and clients. Our business partners, our industry friends. Significant others, families, kids. Couch's amazing staff. Without all of you, this brewery wouldn’t be anywhere near what it is now. Together, we’ve done a ton in the last year.
I’m proud to say Couch has donated hundreds of dollars to local charities. Couch helped a soldier with his home, raised money for an orchestra, donated to a local environmental cause, and a food pantry. Pittsburgh is our home and we give back as much as possible..
If it’s one thing that I’ve learned, it’s the fact that you can’t ever quit learning about beer. We’ve honed our beer making skills, tweaked our recipes, and learned so much about beer and brewing. Educating ourselves more about every ingredient that goes into making our beer has been utterly important to improve our product. We’ve used new and more malts, hops, and yeasts. Water composition is dialed in. Our skills in measuring and adjusting pH have improved. Fermentation temperatures and pitch cell counts have all been double checked. Processes and procedures were streamlined. Basically, everything that has to do with beer production has been examined and adjusted or improved. I started last year with small stack of books; now it’s grown to a mountain. There is always a never ending desire to learn more and do things better.
Atomic Punk, Atomic Meltdown, Basil Shag, Next to Mars, One More Cup of Coffee Stout, Tiki Torch. It blew us away how much you guys embraced these variants! We were steadfast on not making a pumpkin beer at first, but I’m glad we did. Atomic Punk was extremely popular and we burned through barrels it.
Baja 1000 is a beer that really took off for us. We were the first to bring a true to style brut IPA to the Pittsburgh market. You’ve embraced it and we have a hard time keeping up with production. Baja is one of regularly released cans. Speaking of cans...
Cans rule. They are the fastest growing sales segment in our repertoire. We all love them! Look for our newly stocked cooler that will always have something you can grab to go. Mix a four pack, because we’re cool like that.
So, we’ve got a surprise we can’t keep a secret any longer. Atomic Clock is making its way to a shelf near you. Labels have been approved for distribution. This is something we’ve been really excited to share! I never thought Atomic Clock would become so popular and one of our best sellers. The recipe came about because I was getting over IPA’d and wanted to have something mellow on draft. That being said, I think there’s a trend that embraces simple, clean tasting beers. So….
We brewed a pilsner. Look for it on draft and in cans late January 2019. If it goes well, it will start our tweaking process and become a standard brand for Couch.
As we continue our adventure in 2019, we'll continue to make the beer you want to drink. We’re planning on expanding our barrel aging program. More fruit centered beers. Possibly, more variants from our standard brands.
This is an exciting time for us. Thank you for embracing Couch Brewery and supporting the growing Pittsburgh brewery scene. We owe our growth to you, and can’t thank you enough for all the love you’ve given Couch.
